THE POOLSHARKS

Poolsharks

Members: Oren Zohar on Bass, Mat Turner on Drums, David Behrmann on Guitar, and Connor Fingler on Everything Else
Genre: Pop/Indie/Punk/Dance Rock
Hometown: Richmond, BC
Muzooka Artist Page: www.muzooka.com/thepoolsharks

How long have you all been playing?
We’ve been together for around 6 years. Mat (the drummer) and I are original members and we got together in high school, playing with another guitarist/bassist named David Poon, who eventually moved to Prince George for school. Oren Zohar stepped in to fill in and since then we’ve had our current version of the Poolsharks.

What makes your band special/unique?
It’s hard to say what makes us exactly unique but it’s always hard for us to come up with bands for a direct comparison. We definitely have our own vibe going on and while this type of music (pop-punk) is far from new we definitely splash our own flavour into it. We really like to cram our songs full of hooks and grooves and small solos, just trying to make sure there’s always something interesting going on.

Do you have a recently released album?
We are actually planning on releasing a track from our new EP on Friday at the show so another reason to come out! We will be giving away album codes. We have two more songs afterwards to come out on that EP and we are also back in the studio working on our first album. So while we took 6 years to get the ball rolling a bit there’s definitely releases on the near horizon!

Have you played at Studio Records before?
We have played Studio Records twice and it’s been a great time on both occasions. Great room, great sound and a great vibe. We’re always stoked to play there, it’s been one of our favorite venues.

Why should people go to this show?
It’s going to be a great time! We really like to stay animated on stage and push out lots of good vibes into the crowd. It’s a great chance to have a few drinks with your friends and bump into each other a little bit. We’ve been practicing hard and really looking forward to this one, it’s going to be a fun time!

Any words of wisdom for your fellow musicians just starting out?
Play shows and get some recordings! Play together as much as possible and especially at the beginning just do as many shows as you can. Then get into the studio! Don’t wait six years like we did! Make your product and refine your craft! If you’re good it will come from there, just make sure you’re always working!

WITHOUT A CROWN

Without a Crown

Members: Ryley Halvorson on Guitar and Vocals, Matthew Wyllie on Drums and Percussion, Skylar Bartel on Bass and Vocals
Genre: Rock/Hard Rock/Alternative
Hometown: Vancouver, BC
Muzooka Artist Page: www.muzooka.com/withoutacrown

How long have you all been playing?
We have been under the band name ” Without a Crown” since September 2015 after Ryley and Matthew left their previous band to form this one.

We have all been playing for around 4 years and started playing together around the same time we started learning our instruments through lessons as a group. So we have really good chemistry from playing together from the start, and just overall being really good friends.

What makes your band special/unique?
Our band has a unique sound mainly through our various influences, our drummer Matthew has been a dancer for longer than he has been drumming, so rhythm comes naturally to him and he has a very unique feel for the drums. Matt will play almost anything. Ryley, our lead vocalist and guitarist, has influences ranging anywhere from virtuoso guitar players to pop music and pretty much anything in between. Somewhere mixing all of the various styles together , a sort of Hard Rock/Punk vibe has come out of the mix with the twist that Ryley has a relatively higher vocal range than the normal Hard Rock band. Combining crushing rhythms and catchy choruses we like to put on a show that leaves the audience satisfied

Do you have a recently released album?
We are currently in the process of recording our debut 6 song EP that is hopefully going to be released closer to the end of 2016.. we ran into a minor setback due to Ryley breaking his hand in July. We recorded drums at Monarch Studios in Vancouver with Viking Shield Recording and are actually hitting the studio again the day after the Muzooka showcase.

Have you played at Studio Records before?
We played our first show as a band at Studio Records on June 16th, had a blast! We just started working with Kevin from Rednyne Productions and they treat us fantastically! Since it was our first show in this project, we were very excited to finally show our friends and everyone who turned out what we were made of and how our musical style had evolved from our previous projects.

Why should people go to this show?
People should go to this show because it is showcasing 4 talented bands from the West Coast that range in different styles and abilities.. and there is nothing cooler, in our opinion, than a show that is jam-packed with diversity and musicians that just love what they do.

Any words of wisdom for your fellow musicians just starting out?
Words of wisdom, be humble, ALWAYS be humble, and positive. Make tons of friends and just have the time of your life doing what you love, because the attitude that you put into your musical career on and off stage will speak to people, BE INSPIRING and be the BEST YOU CAN BE.

Been playing together as a band just over 2 years – collectively our team has over 50 years of performing experience.

What makes your band special/unique?
A variety of sounds through instrumentation creating a genre best described as ‘tropical grunge’ along with our messaging around reality, life and abundance.

Do you have a recently released album?
We released a 5 track EP last year – Our Universe – and have recently recorded some new singles that’ll be rocking the house at the Muzooka showcase Friday night!

Have you played at Studio Records before?
Absolutely, we had the pleasure of playing at Studio a few times! It’s a great venue for high energy fans to let loose and have a wicked time. Needless to say, we’re stoked to be back!

Why should people go to this show?
Well we’re serving a delicious buffet of soul feeding sounds from 4 guys passionate about excellence in meaningful music. Plus there’s a solid line up with other bands – this show is a must!

Any words of wisdom for your fellow musicians just starting out?
Be original. Be shameless. And remember, hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.

PRETTY IDIOTS

pretty idiots

Members: Carson King on Guitar and Vocals, Brandon Parise on Bass and Vocals, Josch Dauer on Drums
Genre: Funk and Grunge
Hometown: Vancouver, BC
Muzooka Artist Page: www.muzooka.com/prettyidiots

How long have you all been playing?
I’ve been performing for the majority of my life, starting at around age 6. And I’ve lived on the stage since. Brandon started playing shows about 4 years ago and has been playing guitar or bass for the majority of his adult years.

What makes your band special/unique?
The energy that we bring to the stage bleeds into the crowd. You’ve given us part of your valuable time and we repay it in full with a show that runs the gamut of emotions. From trying to make girls fall in love with my voice, to having songs that leave you feeling like you got punched in the face. You’ll experience it all.

Do you have a recently released album?
We have a live ep that is up on SoundCloud at www.soundcloud.com/pretty-idiots and will be heading back into the studio in November and December for a new EP and single to be released in January.

Have you played at Studio Records before?
We had the chance to play studio records at the end of July. We were lucky to share the stage with Stephanie Standerwick among others. It is a great venue with a distinctly Vancouver vibe. From dealing with Live Agency when booking the show there to the sound guy. This venue is quickly becoming one of the small/mid sized venue in the city. Laid out in a perfect way, no hiding spots for the crowd, I’ll be playing there again in October and am looking forward to it.

Why should people go to this show?
Jesus Christ. Look at this line up. If that doesn’t get you excited to get out of the house on a Friday. I’m not sure what will.

Any words of wisdom for your fellow musicians just starting out?
Don’t give up. Don’t get so fucked up you lose your way on your musical path. And never ever forget the importance of a memorable stage show..
