The Flaming Lips have a new album called “The Terror, by the Dawn’s Early Light” (which is basically a less cool version of Pavement’s Terror Twilight) and it’s insane and gorgeous and a bit too much, but in a good way. So, you know, your standard Flaming Lips situation. Oh, and the super hottie awesome Sarah Barthel from Phantogram guests on a track.
You can stream the album here.

Well, this isn’t the worst news I’ve heard all day.

The Black Keys and The Flaming Lips will hit the road together for a short joint tour this Spring. The two festival favorites meet up on April 28th in Kansas City and keep the rock ‘n’ roll hysteria going through May 3rd. No word on whether or not Patrick Carney plans to steal Wayne Coyne’s laser gloves, but we’re sure security is pretty tight around them these days. Consult both bands’ full itineraries below.
Update: Keys frontman Dan Auerbach recently discussed the band’s follow-up to 2011′s El Camino with Mojo, stating: “We’re going to start making the new album in the second week of January and we’re hoping to have it done by some time in March.” He also added, “The record isn’t written yet, we’ll do it when we get into the studio. This is when we both work best, when we’re dying to make an album. All of our records take place in the studio, in that we make stuff up while we’re there.”

Oh, BTW - The Flaming Lips did it.

As expected, the Flaming Lips played 8 cities in 24 hours yesterday, hitting the Memphis-to-New Orleans route and in the process taking Jay-Z’s Guinness Book of World Records title away from the rapper. The group’s sets were peppered with choice covers (such as King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man” and even the odd new track (“You Lust,” in Biloxi, with Phantograam guesting).
In a press release, lead Lip Wayne Coyne noted, “To be able to pick up this silly drinking book — after all, Guinness is a beer — this funny book that when I was growing up was a curiosity. To be published alongside the man who ate 22 pounds of his own boogers, beside the woman with the longest toenails or perhaps even to be published beside an individual who has had maybe 1000 cockroaches stuffed into their ears. That, to me, would be one of life’s absurd joys.”

The Flaming Lips are Being Strange Again
I feel like I already mentioned Jack White’s plans to break a Guinness World Record this summer, but I can’t seem to find that post, so maybe it never happened. It’s a real struggle for me to not talk about Jack White, like, all the time. So maybe I was showing restraint. Let’s be proud of me for that for a second. *pause* Annnd moving on.
Well, he ain’t the only cowboy at the record-breaking summer tour rodeo!
The Flaming Lips have decided to break the world record for most concerts played in 24 hours during their summer tour. (The current record, FYI, is held by Jay-Z and was set back in 2006 while he was promoting Kingdom Come on November 18, in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.)
In a press release, Lips leader and perennial loveable weirdie Wayne Coyne said:

I’ve accepted the attempt at breaking the world record of performing eight shows in 24 hours. And I’ve explained to the music freaks at MTV, VH1 and CMT that I am not a host… But, I always liked the way Jerry Lewis would get all sweaty toward the end of his yearly telethon… To play and sing Flaming Lips songs at eight in the morning… Well, I’m open to new experiences…

Anyone else starting to get the creeping feeling like this summer is going to be super strange, but like, in the way that results in a lot of memorable concert experiences that our grandkids are going to be jealous of?
