As fans of Jack White, The Clash, and Ryan Adams can all attest, sometimes the cover version proves far better than the original. Such is the case for Dinosaur Jr.’s reworking of the new Phoenix single, “Entrainment”. Maybe it’s just the early morning fog, but J. Mascis whining “Entertainment / Show them what you do with me / When everyone here knows better” just feels more convincing. And those dirty guitar solos, they’re just great. Take a listen below (via SPIN).

Carly Rae Jepson just met Nine Inch Nails, and yeah this is crazy.
One of our favorite songs of last year, the sticky, ubiquitous hit by Carly Rae Jepson “Call Me Maybe” is, in all fairness infinitely mash-up-able. There’s a pretty good Childish Gambino version, a decent Calvin Harris version, and an ingratiating Psy version. But this new version making the rounds today is the far and away best in its simplicity, disparity, and seamless execution. Bow down before the one you serve (in this case it’s SoundCloud user pomDeterrific).
By splicing just vocals from Nine Inch Nails’ Pretty Hate Machine single “Head Like a Hole” and the bubblegum beat of “Call Me Maybe”, it somehow switches the key of Reznor’s vocals into the most disturbing major-key pop song. Get in several listens below (via The Verge).

PBS is being great again.

I almost hate to start the day with something this incredible. I don’t know how we’re going to top this today.
